This is one small part of an old Hawaiian prayer that called to the gods and goddesses for healing.  In this prayer, we call to the gods and goddesses to show us where we need to correct our thinking, correct our way of living, so that we can find solutions to our problems, and find healing in our bodies and our relationships:

O ke kahuna i ka puoko a ke ahi.

O 'imi, o loa'a, o loa'a ho'i ka hala uku,

Nana o kono e haele,

E Hele no a miliu mai a.

Eia  ka leo la, he kanaenae aloha na'u na (inoa)

Eia ka pilikia la (ho'ike a'e)

'Eli 'eli kapu, 'eli'eli noa.

Noa ke ku, noa ka hele

Calling the priestess in the pillars of fire.

Seek and find, find my fault, that I may atone;

"There were many gods associated with healing:

Ma'iola, who brought life (ola) out of sickness (ma'i)

There was the god Mauliola,

whose similar name meant "Breath of Life",

Women had recourse to Hi'iaka i ka poli o Pele,

who was considered physician to the family of Pele,

and to Haumea, the earth mother,

who guarded the women in childbirth.

Hauwahine, the mo'o (water creature goddess)

warded off sickness.

Uli, the High goddess of sorcery,

could be called on in life-giving resuscitation.

Lono, Ku and Hina, and to some extent Kane,

would remain through generations

the constantly invoked gods of medicine.

Lono, because he caused all plants to grow,

remained supreme: the Hawaiian Hippocrates

of the healing kahuna.

Ku and Hina continued to symbolize

the balance embodied in well being.

For Ku was maleness; and Hina was female.

Ku was erect, Hina was supine.

Ku was East, the morning,

and Hina was West the evening.

Ku was the external factor, Hina was the internal.

Ku was the right side and the right hand,
Hina, the left."

Kūlia i ka nu‘u.

“Kūlia i ka nu‘u,” - always strive for the summit, wherever you are, whatever you do, to the best of your abilities!

Kūlia i ka nu‘u is the endowed legacy and personal motto of Queen Kapi‘olani, which translates to “Strive for the Summit” or “Strive for the Highest.”

Formally known as Esther Julia Kapi‘olani Napelakapuokaka‘e, Queen Kapi‘olani was married to King David Kalākaua and reigned as Queen Consort of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i from 1874-1891. Beloved by her people, Queen Kapi‘olani made a genuine commitment to helping the people of Hawai‘i; she was always a gracious hostess, full of humility, and a heart full of service. 

In the Hawaiian language, “Kūlia” means Julia; therefore, the beginning of her personal motto, “Kūlia i ka nu‘u,” is profoundly used as a Hawaiian proverb statewide in many organizations, programs and communities.


Kūlia i ka nu‘u represents the value of achievement. Those who have this value continually pursue personal excellence just as Queen Kapi‘olani had done for the Hawaiian people.

Divine Creator or Divine Intelligence – first of four elements of the mind, also known as the source or the creator within us and as the "omaka" in the Hawaiian language, which means "the source".

Super Conscious Mind – second of four elements of the human mind that sits below the Divine Creator and above the conscious mind, and the subconscious mind.  In the Hawaiian language it is called the "aumakua" which means, "across all time and space."


Intellect or Conscious Mind – third of four elements of the human mind that sits below the super consciousness and above the subconscious. The Hawaiian language word is "uhane" which means "soul."
Subconscious Mind – fourth of four elements of the human mind that sits directly below the conscious mind, also known as the child aspect of the mind. In the Hawaiian language it is called the "unihipili". The subconscious mind is where all memories or data are stored or where problems are found.

Papahānaumoku (Mother earth) is a woman with many gifts to rightfully share with us upon our path.

Papahānaumoku sat with Wakea (sky father) and gave birth to the islands of Hawai‘i. It was her choice to care for her children. Very similar to our own mothers, they had a choice to become mothers of generations.

Therefore, it is our responsibility to become one with the land. How do we carry on such responsibility? We seek to understand and become the life of the land.

A relationship to the heavens that sustains your vision, the sun that shines your love, the clouds that warm your beloved, the rain that guides your guardian, the mountain that humbles your aspiration, the forest that adorns your image, the stream that nurtures your life and the sea that leads your dreams.

We were told of the Great Huli when the earth would turn in 2012, a time when our Heads will be placed Lower than Our Hearts when we let go of ways that have not served us and return to PONO when we feel before we think.

A bundle, utilized to care for all things that surrounds one’s life.

One asks the question, how does one care for a precious lei? A bundle is created so that the precious lei is cared for. A bundle is an amazing creation, such as a metaphor for tears, a container for winds, a gift, a basket of ancestral bone, a bag of food or a gift of knowledge found within—given by your ancestors.

If you look within your life, you will find a precious bundle filled with the knowledge of your responsibilities.

Your story is your story, your miracle is your miracle.
